Detached project:
Since Oct 2008 we have run a detached project in the Gilesgate and Sherburn Road estates on Wednesday and Friday nights. Our team builds positive relationships with and among the young people through engagement in dialogue and activities. We particularly target young people who do not access any other youth provision, are NEET (not in education, employment or training) or who are at risk of offending. Much of our work is issue-based and involves meeting young people where they are at, often in small groups; walking with them in their lives and signposting them to other services, providers and opportunities where appropriate.
We currently have positive relationships with several statutory, voluntary and faith based groups. We are always keen to make more connections and partnerships to provide better youth work for young people. Please do get in touch if you are also working towards this - it may be helpful for us to get together for a conversation about future work!
A key imminent partnership is with Reflex which will enable us to deliver more focused project work with young people who are at risk of offending. See www.reflex.org to find out more about this next step.
As a new centre with limited resources we have focused much of our outreach to a particular area. However it is our vision that we can expand this work by; supporting others who wish to outreach in a different area and; developing partnerships which will expand our capacity in order that we might together serve more communities across County Durham with the good news.
