SLUM SURVIVOR 2K8

Hey y'all - Aimee here...

The topic of this blog post? Slum Survivor!

When: 14-16 March, 2K8
Where: St. John's Neville's Cross

Are you excited or what? I'm absolutely stoked. Kate and I can't get through a conversation without mentioning Slum Survivor at least once. It's going to be amazing. Building a slum city out of cardboard? That's Awesome (with a great big capital A). Sleeping in your handcrafted slum home? Fantastic. Raising money (& awareness) for homelessness & real slum residents worldwide? What would you rather do with your weekend? The answer is 'nothing', in case you were wondering...

Quick ego stroke for you: You are crazy important to making this event happen! We are SO excited about having you come and share this unique experience with your friends! Also, your involvement in this event will help shape another regional event coming up soon - The Big Sleep - similar to Slum Survivor in the sense that you're taking part in a homelessness simulation, but with a bit of a twist. Keep checking back here for details; we'll fill you in as we get more information.

We need you to draw as much sponsorship as possible to help really make a difference. Think of it this way: judging by the interest you've expressed, we'll hopefully have at least 20 people at this event. If everyone raised just £50 each, that's £1000 towards improving the lives of slum residents globally!

You might wonder (and even be a bit worried) about how you're going to raise £50. £50 might sound like a lot of money. (Sounds like loads to me!)

Fact: the average 13-year-old in the UK receives approximately £45 a month in allowance alone.

We're not asking you to forfeit your allowance – but we are asking you to be bold & ask mum, dad, Aunt Beatrice or your neighbour from down the street if they'll sponsor you (try starting at asking £10 per person you speak to) to participate in an amazing event called Slum Survivor. You'll be surprised how painless this is, haha. I know you can do it!

We are advertising here on our blog, on Facebook (thank you, Technology) and via flyers and face-to-face - in person at your youth groups, but remember you are only properly signed up once we have your consent form(link) and a £10 deposit (as part of your sponsorship!) and we need this by the 9 March at the absolute latest.

We've already got a few of you signed up, and that's fabulous, but we need the rest of you lot! I can't stress this enough: Slum Survivor Durham cannot happen without your involvement, so hop to it! Get signed up, fill out your consent form, talk to a few friends & family members about sponsoring you & then all you'll have to do is show up on the 14th ready to rough it!

Once again, we're really looking forward to seeing you there... it's going to be immense!

Coming soon... Slum Survivor Top Tips - what you can expect come 14 March.
